The Crocodile Bridge in Tarcoles, Costa Rica

One of the awesome places to check out on the Pacific coast

The crocodile bridge in Tarcoles, Costa Rica is a must see for both residents and tourists alike. People from all over stop at the bridge to look over the sides where dozens of crocodiles like to hang out. You can see them basking in the sun or swimming around in the river. It’s amazing to see so many in one place. The Tarcoles bridge is about a 15 minute drive from the Jaco Beach area and about an hour from the city centers. Well worth the time for a quick trip.

The Rio Tarcoles itself is is 69 miles long and runs from the southern slopes of the Cordillera Central volcanic range and flows in a south-westerly direction to the Nicoya Gulf. Sightseeing over the Tarcoles bridge is free, but if you want to get even closer there are several Crocodile tours that you can book. The tours are great and it’s an awesome thing to see the trained tour operators hand feed the massive crocs. If you’re just watching from the bridge, you might be able to find a local guide that will pick you up some chicken scraps to toss down to the crocs. They don’t move around a lot generally, but when they are feeding they are quite the sight.
